APPARITION — Research into puppetry figures

Starting with an object, a piece of clothing, or a puppet, we will bring forth “another” or ‘others’ that challenge us, provoke us, and change our breathing. Through manipulation techniques, we will try to assimilate the presence of this “other.”

What action causes something to appear, to begin to be, to manifest itself, to become visible?

We will study different forms of appearance in a scenic space, as well as the gestural possibilities of this new being, in order to discover its particularity and develop its character.

We will work on dissociation techniques to understand the rhythm of the puppet, its intelligence—different from ours—which will allow us to find the puppet as an object that becomes a subject. Who is the other? Through play and movement, we will also explore dependence, the influence of one on the other, the appearance, and disappearance of one and the other.

what the festival has to say

The importance of training professionals, artists, and teachers who believe that the development of research and ongoing work with puppets can be a professional asset and contribute to artistic development, as well as the recognition of the artists and techniques that are often behind great creations, led us to invite this artist, who lives in Belgium and has been developing a wide range of excellent work since 2018, and whom we have the great privilege of having with us for a week at the Gondomar International Puppet Festival.

Natacha Belova is a visual artist and puppeteer who develops deeply recognized artistic work for an adult audience, exploring manipulation, but also analytically exploring the surrounding social reality, ageing, identity as a human being, and its profound issues. It is typically a harsh exploration, capable of confronting the dark side of the individual.

It is above all because of the opportunity to learn that, over the course of several Encounters, we have invited great artists from around the world who bring, over an extended period of time, work of recognized international merit and who allow us to enhance direct contact with the exploration of their techniques, their inner, dramaturgical, and artistic pursuits. It will thus be a week of intense work with this artist, resulting in a public presentation where the audience is invited to understand the paths that these workshops find as a methodology for exploring puppetry, whether for research processes or personal and professional artistic development processes.

Tchaïka Theatre Company - Natacha Belova

Compagnie Tchaïka (formerly Cie Belova-Iacobelli) was born of a meeting between two artists: Tita Iacobelli, a Chilean actress and director, and Natacha Belova, a Belgian-Russian puppeteer.

In 2015, in Santiago, they created an experimental theatrical laboratory for contemporary puppet theatre. At the end of this wonderful two-month experiment, they decided to create a show together. That’s how Tchaïka, Compagnie Tchaïka’s first production, premiered in June 2018 in Santiago de Chile. In September 2021, they embarked on the creation of their second show, LOCO, at the Théâtre National Wallonie-Bruxelles in Belgium.
